Biography
Born and raised on the west side of Detroit, Jamar Lockhart is a proud product of Detroit Public Schools. Jamar’s affinity to helping students in the city of Detroit discover their path is evident through his hard work and dedication. He graduated from Oakland University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication and a minor in Studio Art, and received his Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Grand Valley State University in 2013.
Jamar encompasses over ten years of teaching, starting his educational career as a K-8th grade art teacher for several years at Detroit Enterprise Academy. Jamar transitioned into administrative roles shortly after as a Dean of “Specials” and Title 1 Coordinator. Jamar transitioned into higher education as a Program Coordinator for the Michigan Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (MIGEARUP) at Wayne State University in 2013. In that role, Jamar has developed many workshops ranging from college readiness to financial aid to help assist students in transitioning into post-secondary education. Jamar also enjoyed 2 years as an instructor for the First Year Seminar (FYS) course specifically for African - American males at Wayne State University.
Jamar serves as the Program Director for MIGEARUP and in this capacity he oversees the MIGEARUP program, serving over 1,000 students from high schools in the Metro Detroit area. He focuses the majority of his time establishing and maintaining partnerships with state, community and Wayne State organizations.
Outside of work, Jamar enjoys creating art through painting, reading biographies and watching documentaries and spending time with family and friends.
